EM50/60 Ham Radio POTA Leaderboards

Public Parks on the Air leaderboards for grid squares EM50 and EM60 — no sign-up, no roster, nothing to join. These two grids run along the Gulf Coast of the United States from eastern Louisiana across south Mississippi and Alabama into the Florida panhandle: 22 parks in Florida, 17 in Alabama, 15 in Mississippi and 5 in Louisiana. Those add up to 59, not 57 — two parks sit in two states at once.

The underlying data all comes from POTA’s own public record: each park publishes its grid square, and each uploaded log publishes the call sign that made it. The rankings, the time windows and the totals are worked out here — POTA doesn’t publish a by-grid leaderboard of its own. If you’ve activated a park in these two grids and uploaded your log, you’re already counted, alongside every other operator activating the same parks. These are activator logs only; hunters aren’t counted. The boards show the top ten in each category; the full park list further down covers every park.

Figures here follow POTA’s, so they move on POTA’s timing. Logs reach POTA at different times — an activator may be on the road for days — and POTA notes that even once a QSO appears it can take up to 48 hours for all statistics to finish updating. A number that looks low is usually just early. Every call sign links to that operator’s own POTA profile.

Page last published Tuesday, 22 September 2026 at 1:55 PM CDT. The figures are pulled from POTA once a day, about 02:50 US Central; the page itself rebuilds every few minutes. So if these two are more than about a day apart, the data pull stalled rather than the page.

POTA counts a log as an activation only at 10 or more QSOs; below that it's an attempt. These boards apply that same rule, so each park's activation count here lines up with the figure POTA publishes for that park — 10,600 outings have been logged across these two grids, 10,205 of which reached the threshold. QSO totals count every contact, attempts included, which is how POTA reports a park's contact total in our checks. POTA does not publish a by-grid leaderboard itself; this page is an aggregate built from their public park and log data.

Big Movers

Who grew the most inside EM50 and EM60 from July 2026 to August 2026 — ranked by percent increase, not raw count. This is a grid-scoped figure, not your POTA-wide total: an operator active outside these two grids will see a smaller number here than on their own POTA profile. Percent means a small operator doubling from one activation to two can outrank someone going from 50 to 90 — that's the board doing what it's for, not a bug. Brand-new operators aren't ranked here at all; see "New in August 2026" below for them. Only increases are shown — if a callsign isn't listed below, it likely held steady, dropped, had no activity in either month, or asked to be left off these boards.

Figures for August 2026 can still be settling: POTA logs sometimes arrive late and can take up to 48 hours to finish updating once they do, so the first few days after a month closes are the ones most likely to move.

POTA's public API returns each operator's 25 most recent hunter QSOs, so this list is built from that rolling window and grows from 2026-08-07. Operators can see their own full history on POTA; there is no public API to aggregate park-to-park by grid, which is why these counts start here rather than reaching back.

Working another park inside these grids takes an antenna aimed at the next county rather than across the country: 40m NVIS, a 6m Moxon, a 2m Yagi, or CW/digital. Most park-to-park happens on 20M, whose skip zone lands hundreds of miles away.

The Biggest Single Activations

The biggest single activation on record here is 685 contacts, by W3UR at US-0661 Gulf Islands National Seashore on 2022-02-19.

One activation means one log — one call sign, one park, one UTC day. Note call sign, not operator: club stations are one log and many operators, and these tables don't mark which rows are which — read any entry as possibly a club. A log needs 10 contacts to count as an activation at all, so everything below cleared that bar; shorter outings are covered under What the Hunters Did.

Two things this cannot see. A session that runs past 0000Z — 6 PM here in winter, 7 PM in summer — becomes two logs, and if the later one falls under 10 contacts it is filed as an attempt rather than as part of the same sitting, so some evening totals are split. And an n-fer, where one sitting sits inside two parks at once, files one log per park with the same contacts in both, so it can appear here twice.

What actually tops this board is usually a station set up to work a pile-up: a club or multi-operator setup, often on an organised event weekend. Three of the all-time ten are the same club call at the same park on the first Saturday in June, three years running. Conditions, time on site and a park near a population centre do the rest. None of that makes a quiet activation a lesser one — the park table is the better place to look for what is genuinely under-activated.

What the Hunters Did

Every activation on this page needed somebody on the other end. POTA counts a log as an activation at 10 contacts and not one below it, so on a leaderboard like this the hunters are not the audience — they are the measurement.

394 of those activations finished on exactly 10 contacts. Some operators stopped once they had the minimum; others only just reached it. A log does not record which, and either way the tenth contact is the one that made it an activation.

These bands add up rather than divide up — each row includes the rows above it, so the shares are not meant to be summed.

The 395 logs that stopped short are the part worth reading twice, because the hunters in them were credited anyway. Credit flows from the log, not from the activation succeeding — POTA's rules say, “Hunters do not submit logs to the program… Hunters earn credit through the activator’s logs,” and describe submitting a short log as the courteous thing to do: “Courteous activators will still submit logs for unsuccessful activations to ensure their hunters get credit for the QSOs.” So those 1,528 contacts counted for the people on the other end even though the day did not count for the operator. Why each log was filed is not something a log records, and this page does not guess at it — but whatever the reason, calling these failures describes only one end of the contact.

The two contact totals on this page are both right and count different things: the boards above report 425,962 QSOs, every contact logged in these grids, while 424,434 is the part made inside activations that reached 10. The difference is exactly the 1,528 in the shorter logs. Counted from POTA's own public activation records for all 57 parks, the same records every board on this page is built from. Log submission has no deadline, so a log that reads short today can be completed later; these figures are recomputed nightly rather than frozen.

Counts start 2026-08-07 and grow — POTA's public feed shows each operator's 25 most recent hunter contacts, so this reaches back only as far as tracking has been running. Nobody is added by hand: the operators checked are those POTA shows activating in these grids, which means a local who only hunts and never activates will not appear here yet. That is a gap in the data, not a judgement about anyone.

Top Spotters

The other way people help an activator: putting them on the POTA spotting page so everyone else can find them. A spot is a small act of work — you stop what you are doing, type somebody else's call sign and frequency, and hand them a pileup. Nothing in POTA's own record keeps score of it.

This board counts spots, not contacts. POTA's rules say so plainly: “anyone (including hunters) can also spot/respot you, regardless of whether they are working that activator.” Plenty of the people below did work the operator they spotted. The public record cannot show which, so this page does not guess — it credits the spot, which is a real thing somebody did.

What this board leaves out

Two kinds of spot are left out. Automated skimmer spots — the Reverse Beacon Network hears a CW or digital signal and posts it with nobody choosing to — and operators spotting themselves, which logging software often does for them. Neither is a person deciding to help somebody else.

Measured on every spot this has actually looked at, not on a sample:

The skimmer share is normally the large one, and on a live sample it was most of the traffic. That is the RBN doing its job, not a flaw in the feed.

Counts start 2026-08-14 and grow. POTA keeps no history of spots — they leave the spotting page about 30 minutes after the last one, or sooner if a comment marks QRT — so this is built by watching every five minutes and can only ever reach back to the day it started. Unlike the board above, this one has no home-grid requirement: spot an activator in EM50 or EM60 from anywhere in the world and you are on it.

The All Parks Award

Activating every park in EM50 and EM60 is the hardest thing these two grids have to offer, and for years nobody had done it. The operators below have. Being first is the one thing here that can only happen once.

Each row shows the number of parks in these grids on the day that operator finished. POTA adds parks, so a later row can need a larger set — which is why the figure is fixed at the date earned rather than recounted. An award already earned is not taken back when a new park appears.

Chasing the Sweep

There are 57 parks in EM50 and EM60, and every one has at least one uploaded activation — no untouched parks left in either grid. So the scarce thing here isn't a new park to find, it's a complete set. This is how far along each operator is. Anyone showing 57 here has finished, and is named under the award above.
